A 41-year-old man, Nathan Brown, has allegedly killed his wife and seven-year-old daughter with a screwdriver at a home-based daycare in Hopkins, Minnesota, United States.

The suspect allegedly attacked his 41-year-old wife, Kristen Brown and their daughter, Evie, at the daycare operated by Kristen from the basement of their home.

According to police, a father who arrived to drop off his children heard screams from the basement and entered the building. He initially thought Brown was performing CPR before realising that an attack was underway.

He immediately alerted emergency services and helped evacuate the children.

Six children were reportedly at the daycare at the time of the incident, but none was injured.

Police said Brown later died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Investigators are also looking into whether Brown was involved in the death of a 78-year-old woman found dead at a home in Burnsville, about 32 kilometres from Hopkins.

The motive for the killings remains unclear.

According to a search warrant, Kristen had recently informed her parents that she intended to close the daycare due to “relationship issues” with her husband.

The daycare had been licensed since 2019 and had passed state inspections in 2023, 2024 and 2025.
