As Osun State prepares for Saturday’s governorship election, political parties are rounding off efforts to mobilise voters across the 3,763 polling units across the state’s 30 local government areas ahead of what is expected to be a closely contested poll.

The election is also the last off-cycle governorship election in Nigeria before the 2027 general elections, following the Ekiti State governorship poll held on June 20.

In an earlier report, Tribune Online examined the 10 LGAs that produced the highest number of votes in the 2022 governorship election won by Ademola Adeleke. The report highlighted how a handful of local governments played a significant role in shaping the outcome of the contest that saw Adeleke defeat then-incumbent governor Adegboyega Oyetola. Adeleke secured 403,371 votes, representing 50.14 per cent of the total valid votes cast, while Oyetola polled 375,027 votes.

With less than 24 hours until voters return to the polls, attention is also turning to the distribution of polling units across the state. The forthcoming election is expected to feature incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke of the Accord Party, All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate Bola Oyebamiji, and African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate Najeem Salaam among the leading contenders.

Although the number of polling units does not automatically translate into votes, LGAs with larger concentrations of polling units often attract greater attention from political parties because of their voter mobilisation potential and strategic importance on election day.
