Kano to deploy drones for border security

Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has announced plans to acquire drones and additional logistics to strengthen surveillance and rapid-response operations in border communities vulnerable to bandit attacks.

The development was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday and signed by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Tofa.

According to the statement, the governor disclosed on Tuesday while assessing the readiness of Joint Task Force (JTF) personnel at their three bases in Tsanyawa and Shanono Local Government Areas, where bandits recently carried out coordinated attacks.

The visit follows months of growing insecurity along the Kano–Katsina border, where repeated incursions by armed groups have left residents on edge and triggered intensified multi-agency deployments.

Governor Yusuf appealed to residents of the affected communities to support security operatives with actionable intelligence on bandit movements to help curb further attacks.

He also disclosed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu responded positively when he briefed him on the escalating situation and requested federal backing.

The governor charged the JTF to intensify efforts toward securing the release of kidnapped residents from Tsanyawa and Shanono.

“We are aware that they have been attacking innocent communities, especially here in Tsanyawa and Shanono Local Government Areas. Many innocent lives were taken away, and many innocent people were also sent to the bush. “We would secure drones and other logistics for surveillance and rapid response to protect inhabitants of the border areas.”

“I assured you that by God’s grace, those who were kidnapped will be brought back to their families.”

Yusuf told the troops that his visit was to assess the security situation, hold direct engagements with operatives and encourage them to give their best to the ongoing operations.

“This type of insecurity in Kano State is something new; it is something alien that has just been observed in the state, and the government is doing its best to address the situation with the cooperation of security agencies,” the governor added.

He further assured that his administration would provide all necessary welfare support to frontline security personnel.

The statement noted that during the assessment tour, the governor met families of kidnapped victims and condoled with them, assuring them that efforts to secure their release were being intensified.

Recent attacks in the two councils reportedly resulted in the abduction of between five and ten persons, while a woman was killed during one of the incidents.

The statement was signed by Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, Director-General, Media and Publicity, Government House, Kano. (PUNCH)
