Amorim: I stay off social media to protect my family from abuse

Manchester United Head Coach, Amorim

Ruben Amorim has opened up on why he stays away from social media, noting the decision is to protect himself and his family from abuse.

Amorim’s comments come amidst a shocking surge in online harassment targeting football professionals.

A recent BBC report found that over 2,000 abusive social media posts or messages, including death and rape threats, were directed at managers and players in the Premier League and Women’s Super League over just one weekend in November.

Amorim, alongside Liverpool’s Arne Slot and Newcastle United’s Eddie Howe, was among the most targeted figures in the men’s top flight.

“It’s normal in any profession when you are exposed to it,” Amorim said.

“I don’t read it; I protect myself. I don’t watch TV when they are talking about Manchester United, not because I don’t agree, most of the time I do, but it’s a way for me to be healthy.

“My feeling as a coach is enough. I don’t need other feelings. The only way is to protect myself.”

The BBC investigation, carried out with data science firm Signify, analysed posts from 10 Premier League and six WSL matches on November 8 and 9. It uncovered widespread racist slurs, homophobia, and violent threats.

Managers received more abuse than players, while X (formerly Twitter) accounted for 82% of the abusive posts. Most of the messages, 61%, came from accounts based in the UK and Ireland, with the overall volume rising.

Amorim also revealed the financial cost of staying off social platforms.

“I lose money from sponsors. On Instagram, I could earn a lot of money, but for the protection of my family and living a normal life, it is not worth some more dollars or pounds.

“Nobody can be tougher than me when we lose and when we don’t play well. Nowadays, it’s really normal to have that abuse, so it’s the only way to survive in this world.”

Man United finished 15th in the Premier League last season, their lowest position since 1973/74, and lost the Europa League final to Tottenham, missing out on European football. (BusinessDay)
