CHARLES IWUOHA
Unknown gunmen on Tuesday afternoon, attacked a popular Onueke community in Ezza South Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
It was gathered that the gunmen, numbering about five, had trailed a customer to one of the commercial banks in the area where they killed a police officer.
They shot sporadically in the air near the bank causing customers and staff to scamper in various directions for safety.
It was not immediately clear if they succeeded in robbing the man and whether he is still alive or dead.
The source noted that they did not enter the bank as their interest seemed to be the man.
However, the gunmen were said to have moved from the bank to some business points in the area which they robbed.
They were said to have entered a provision store and carted away some cartoons of drinks. From there, they moved to a nearby drinks shop where they robbed them of their money.
Not satisfied, they moved into a nearby filling station and also carted away all the money made from the day’s transactions.
News Express reliably gathered that police and military officers arrived at the point and engaged them in a shootout, which made them to drive away from the area.
State Police spokesperson, Loveth Odah, could not be reached for comment at the time of this report.
When contacted on the phone, the Ebonyi State Commissioner for Internal Security, Chief Stanley Okoro Emegha, confirmed the incident and the killing of police officer.
