A Lagos-based activist, Mr. Richard Akinnola, has lodged a suit before the Federal High Court, Abuja, seeking to compel the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct the 2015 elections on the rescheduled dates even if advised to the contrary by the country’s security chiefs.
The polls were originally billed to take place on Feb. 14 and 28 but were moved to March 28 and April 11 on the advice of the security chiefs.
In Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/142/15 filed on his behalf yesterday by Lagos lawyer Festus Keyamo, Akinnola is seeking for “an order of Mandamus compelling INEC to conduct the 2015 elections as scheduled on March 28 and April 11, irrespective of the advice, position or opposition” of the Chief of Army Staff, Chief of Air Staff, Chief of Naval Staff and National Security Adviser.
He is also seeking an order of Mandamus compelling the Inspector General of Police to provide men and materials for the security of men of INEC as well as an order of injunction restraining the service chiefs and NSA from further interfering with INEC’s conduct of the 2015 elections.
“It has not been assigned but I am sure we would get a date for the ex parte next week due to my affidavit because of the urgency,” Akinnola told News Express this morning.
