The dream of three governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to attend yesterday’s rally in Ado Ekiti, the state capital, in support of Governor Kayode Fayemi’s re-election bid in tomorrow’s ballot was aborted by security agents, it has been claimed.
While Rivers State Governor, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, said he was held hostage by security agents in Odudu, Ondo State, Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, said soldiers prevented a chopper that was scheduled to convey him to the rally from taking off from the airport in Benin City, the Edo State capital.
Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, made a similar allegation, saying that another aircraft conveying him to the rally was denied landing rights at the Akure airport.
A statement issued late last night by Rivers State Commissioner of Information and Communications, Ibim Semenitari, said that Amaechi was forced to return to Port Harcourt by road following the impounding of the plane that was to have taken him from Ondo to Ekiti. The statement entitled ‘GOVERNOR AMAECHI REGAINS HIS FREEDOM’ said:
“After an unwarranted attack on his person and infringement on his freedom of movement, Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi has been allowed to leave Olorunsogo – Ilado, Ondo State.
Governor Amaechi was allowed to leave by road after the aircraft that carried him to Akure was impounded on superior orders.
“The governor is in high spirits and remains committed to the ideals of democratic rule and the right of all parties to a free and fair contest.”
