Olabiso Onabanjo University gate
The student community at Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago-Iwoye, was invaded by robbers in the early hours of Thursday, resulting in the death of a final-year student known simply as Timi.
According to information obtained by the Nigerian Tribune, the robbers stormed the Konigba area, a section predominantly inhabited by students, and operated for several hours without any intervention.
Reports indicate that around seven houses were targeted during the attack, while police arrived late to the scene. The robbers made off with items belonging to the students, including phones, laptops, money, and other valuables.
This incident follows a similar attack that occurred at the Ibogun campus of the university just a few months ago.
In response to the situation, concerned students protested at the palace of the Ebuwame of Ago-Iwoye, Oba Abdulrazaq Adenugba, the Ago Police Station, and the university campus.
The Vice Chancellor, Professor Ayodeji Agboola, urged students to remain calm, assuring them that the university management is in contact with the State Police Command to ensure the safety of both lives and property within the community.
Additionally, the university declared Thursday a lecture-free day for students preparing for their second-semester examinations of the 2025/2026 academic session, which are set to begin next Monday.
In a statement issued by the Deputy Registrar of the Corporate Affairs Division, Niyi Oduwole, the university management encouraged students to exercise restraint and avoid any actions that could further escalate the situation.
The statement reads, “Following the incident of armed robbery in Ago-Iwoye township that resulted in the tragic loss of one of our students early this morning, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ayodeji Agboola, on behalf of the University Senate has directed that today, Thursday, 18th June, 2026 be declared a lecture-free day.
“While commiserating with the entire students over the demise of their colleague, the University Management expresses its heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased and assures the students that adequate security measures will be put in place in collaboration with relevant security agencies to ensure safety of lives and property.
“Management also appeals to the entire student population that in grieving over the untimely death of their colleague, they should exercise restraint and eschew any action that will further aggravate the situation on the ground. At this critical period, the University Management pledges its support to the students and sympathises with them over their departed colleague.”
Reacting to the incident, the State Police confirmed the ugly development through the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi.
“The Ogun State Police Command has commenced investigation into the tragic death of an Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) student who was shot by suspected armed robbers in Ago-Iwoye.
” Police operatives responded promptly and have launched a manhunt for the perpetrators.
“Investigation is ongoing, while the Command commiserates with the family and the OOU community and prays that the deceased’s soul rests in perfect peace,” the Police statement reads. (Nigerian Tribune)
