NYSC DG, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu
The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, has cautioned Corps Members against participating in partisan political activities during their service year, stressing that the scheme remains an apolitical institution.
General Nafiu gave the warning while addressing the 2026 Batch ‘B’ Stream I Corps Members at the NYSC Lagos State Orientation Camp in Iyana-Ipaja, Lagos, according to a statement by the Director of Public Relations, Caroline Embu, on Wednesday in Abuja.
He advised the corps members to avoid political campaigns, rallies, and any activities that could associate them with political parties.
“Do not get involved in the campaign of any political party. Don’t mix NYSC with politics. You should stay clear of politics,” he warned.
The NYSC Director-General also urged the Corps Members to exercise caution in their use of social media, warning against engaging in cyberstalking, cyberbullying, cyber fraud, and other online offences.
“If you are found guilty, you will face the consequences. Be careful about the way you use social media,” he said.
Nafiu reminded the corps members that they have promising futures ahead of them and should avoid actions capable of jeopardising their aspirations.
He encouraged them to remain disciplined, manage their finances wisely, and cultivate a savings culture.
The DG further called on the corps members to use the service year as an opportunity to foster national unity and integration by building meaningful relationships with people from different cultural backgrounds.
He also encouraged them to embrace the NYSC Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme and take advantage of investment opportunities in the capital market to enhance their financial wellbeing.
According to him, the launch of the NYSC/Kudimata Capital Market Awareness Sensitisation Programme in Lagos was aimed at equipping corps members with practical financial knowledge and investment skills.
“It is a programme designed to empower you with financial knowledge and investment capacity. It will also enable corps members to make informed financial decisions,” he said.
Earlier, the NYSC Lagos State Coordinator, Mrs Christianah Salmwang, informed the Director-General that a total of 9,955 corps members had been registered at the camp, including those undergoing orientation in other states.
She commended the corps members for their enthusiasm, discipline, and readiness to serve the nation, expressing confidence that they would contribute positively to national development during their service year. (Nigerian Tribune)
