The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Galaxy Backbone Limited, Prof. Ibrahim Adeyanju, has said Nigeria’s cybersecurity architecture has been significantly strengthened to prevent cyberattacks and curb the activities of hackers ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking on Monday during a press conference at the headquarters of Galaxy Backbone in Abuja to mark its 20th anniversary, Adeyanju said government had observed periodic spikes in cyberattacks during election cycles and periods of civil unrest, necessitating stronger digital safeguards.
He noted that ongoing investments in digital infrastructure, including the National Project BRIDGE, would further enhance national connectivity and security.
The project, designed to deliver over 15,000 kilometres of additional fibre-optic infrastructure, is expected to expand coverage to underserved and unserved communities across the country.
According to him, 30 states are already benefiting from fibre deployment by Galaxy Backbone, while the remaining states and local government areas are expected to be covered in due course under the project spearheaded by the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani.
Adeyanju said the expanding infrastructure would strengthen Nigeria’s capacity to deter cyber threats and improve resilience against coordinated attacks on digital systems.
He also highlighted the agency’s achievements over the past two decades, noting that Galaxy Backbone has lined up activities including exhibitions, summits, and corporate social responsibility initiatives to commemorate its anniversary.
He said the upcoming summit, themed “Powering Nigeria’s Digital Future,” would focus on the role of technology in driving national development, improving governance, and boosting economic growth.
Adeyanju commended President Bola Tinubu for his commitment to digital transformation under the Renewed Hope Agenda, adding that the administration’s policies would particularly benefit Nigeria’s youth population, which makes up a significant share of the country’s demographics.
He also commended the Minister of Communications, Innovations and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani for his resilience and sacrifices in ensuring robust digital ecosystem for the country through infrastructures and commitments from both the private and public sectors.
He said stakeholders collaboration and partnership coordinated by the Minister have continued to drive the digital ecosystem towards successful transformation, stressing that such partnerships are helping to transform Start ups as well as Small and Medium Scales Enterprises (SMES) across Nigeria.
Speaking on Galaxy Backbone journey so far, Prof Adeyanju said :”Two decades ago, the Federal Government of Nigeria took a bold and visionary decision at a time when digital transformation was still emerging globally and government technology infrastructure was largely fragmented, a decision was made to establish an institution that would build and manage a shared digital infrastructure platform for government.
“The vision was simple but powerful: To create a connected government; To eliminate duplication; To improve efficiency; To enhance service delivery and to build a digital foundation capable of supporting Nigeria’s long-term development aspirations.
“That vision gave birth to Galaxy Backbone.
Today, twenty years later, we are proud to say that vision has not only endured, it has evolved.”
Detailing the achievements of the Agency, Prof Adeyanju said:” Our fibre infrastructure today spans almost 30 states of the federation, connecting government institutions and creating the foundation for digital government.
“Behind every digital service lies connectivity and connectivity remains one of the most powerful enablers of transformation.
“We have invested in world-class data centre infrastructure, including uptime certified Tier III and Tier IV facilities that provide secure, resilient and reliable environments for hosting mission-critical systems and applications.
“These facilities strengthen data sovereignty, ensure business continuity and help keep Nigeria’s most critical digital assets secure.
Through our cloud infrastructure and the 1Government Cloud platform, government institutions can access scalable digital services without the burden of building costly infrastructure independently.” (The Nation)
