Apostolic Nuncio to Nigeria Archbishop Francis Crotty
The Apostolic Nuncio to Nigeria, Archbishop Francis Crotty, has called on the Nigerian government to intensify efforts to stem the killing of Christians in some parts of the North.
Crotty expressed concern that incessant deadly attacks on Christians, particularly in states such as Plateau, Kaduna, and Niger, have yet to be curtailed.
The representative of the Pope in Nigeria stated this in a chat with journalists shortly after the ordination ceremonies and Mass for 10 new Catholic priests, held at Christ the King College, Odolewu, Ijebu Ode.
Archbishop Crotty, who was on a three-day visit to the Catholic Diocese of Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, said Pope Leo XIV is deeply concerned about the rising number of affected persons in Plateau, Niger, Kaduna, and Taraba states and has publicly condemned the attacks, including those that occurred in Benue State last June.
He, however, expressed disappointment that many of these incidents go unreported and appealed to the media to shed more light on the atrocities, emphasising that such acts must not be tolerated.
“These incidents must be stopped,” Crotty stressed.
He commended the Nigerian bishops for their clear stance on the issue, referencing their November statement calling on authorities to guarantee the safety and security of all citizens, regardless of religion or ethnic identity.
“The Church stands firm with the bishops of Nigeria, not just as pastors but as citizens who desire peace and stability in their country. The primary common good is peace, security, and the well-being of all Nigerians.
“The Catholic Church is urging the Nigerian government to intensify efforts to stem the tide of these nefarious activities, charging them with the responsibility to protect citizens and ensure the rule of law,” he added.
The Archbishop noted that his remarks echo the Church’s unwavering commitment to promoting social justice and defending human life, particularly in the face of brutal violence and bloodshed.
“The Church’s message is clear: the killing of Christians and other Nigerians must stop, and those responsible must be held accountable. The international community and media are urged to take notice and join forces with the Church in demanding justice and peace for Nigeria,” Crotty submitted. (The Sun)
