The Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yoruba land,Iba Gani Adams, has pleaded with traditional rulers in Yorubaland to set aside supremacy battles, noting that it poses danger and may divide the race.
He spoke at the 2026 Oodua Festival, in Ile-Ife, yesterday, where he expressed concerns over disunity among the traditional rulers. He warned that it endangers the cultural heritage, social cohesion, and developmental prospects of the Yoruba people.
Adams noted that political interference and personal rivalries often fuel divisions among the traditional stools, undermining the collective strength and influence of the traditional institution, which has long been a cornerstone of Yoruba identity and governance.
“In recent times, the level of disunity among traditional rulers in Yorubaland has become a pressing concern. I am duty-bound to sound the alarm that this ugly development threatens our cultural heritage, social cohesion, and the future of our people,” Adams stated.
He called on the traditional rulers to abandon supremacy struggles and unite to prevent external influences, emphasizing the need for a unified voice in advancing the interests of Yorubaland and the southwest region. “This fragmentation is detrimental. We must work together for the progress of our people instead of pursuing personal agendas,” he said.
Adams also appealed to the political establishment in Yorubaland, as well as Yoruba elders and leaders, to mediate between the traditional rulers. “Our Obas must embrace unity for the advancement of Yorubaland. This is essential for harnessing the region’s potential for social and economic development,” he added.
Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, represented by the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Abiodun Ojo, called on the diaspora to collaborate with the state government in revitalizing tourist sites. “The government cannot do it alone. We have many tourist centers in Osun State, and we invite our people in the diaspora to assist us in upgrading these sites,” Ojo said.
Oba Idowu Adediwura, the Obalufe of Ife, who represented the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, urged southwest governors to support Gani Adams in his efforts to liberate Yorubaland.
He reiterated the importance of solidarity in promoting the well-being of the Yoruba people, saying “We need to use wisdom in our fight for Yoruba freedom, not weapons. Gani Adams embodies this wisdom,” he said. (The Sun)
