ASUU confirms talks with FG team as strike enters seventh day

Chris Piwuna, ASUU President

As the two-week warning strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) enters its seventh day, the union has confirmed that negotiations are ongoing with the Federal Government’s Renegotiation Team led by former Head of Service, Alhaji Yayale Ahmed.

The union also disclosed that “progress is being recorded” on five of its seven-point demands, raising hopes of an early resolution to the industrial action.

In a bulletin to members dated October 19, 2025, and obtained by The Guardian, ASUU President, Prof. Christopher Piwuna, listed the areas of progress to include the release of third-party deductions, payment of arrears of promotions and mainstreaming of Earned Academic Allowances (EAA).

Others include the confiscation of University of Abuja (UNIABUJA) land, and the victimization of members at Prince Abubakar Audu University, Lagos State University (LASU), and Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO).

Titled Strike Bulletin No. 2, the correspondence noted that some prominent Nigerians have also intervened in efforts to resolve the lingering impasse between the union and the government.

“Engagements are continuing on all elements of the draft renegotiated 2009 FGN-ASUU Agreement guided by the principles of Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

“We commend the resilience and courage of our members in various branches, but we should remain united and steadfast in the few days ahead.

“The Branch Chairperson remains the only reliable source of information at all times; so attend your branch congress meetings promptly,” Piwuna said.

The ongoing warning strike, declared last week, is part of ASUU’s push to compel the government to implement pending agreements and address issues affecting university funding, staff welfare, and institutional autonomy. (The Guardian)
