Retired police officers during their earlier protest
The Union of Retired Police Officers under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) has announced plans to stage what it described as the “father of all peaceful protests” at the National Assembly on Monday.
In a statement signed by the chairman of its Kaduna state chapter, CSP Mannir Lawal Zaria (rtd), the union decried worsening living conditions of retired officers, citing poverty, lack of access to healthcare, inability to feed, children withdrawn from school and rising deaths among members.
The union said delegates from the 36 states and the FCT will converge on the National Assembly for the protest, saying the resolution followed a virtual meeting held September 22, 2025, which revisited the long-standing demand for the exit of the Nigeria Police Force from the CPS.
CSP Lawal said the demand had been pursued for over 15 years through petitions, protests and memoranda, leading to three public hearings where lawmakers were presented with evidence comparing the meager pensions of retired police officers with benefits enjoyed by counterparts in the military and DSS.
He recalled that although the 9th Assembly passed a bill to remove the Police from the CPS, it stalled when the House of Representatives failed to harmonize with the Senate. The 10th Assembly reopened deliberations after retirees staged a mass protest in July, when lawmakers assured them the exit bill was ready for adoption. (Blueprint)
