Late General Muhammadu Sani Sami Sami Gomo II
By YAKUBU AHMED BK
My fascination with General Muhammad Sani Sami (Sami Gomo II), the Emir of Zuru began in December 1985 when he was appointed Military Governor of the old Bauchi State. His no-nonsense demeanor commanded respect, and I was eager to meet him in person to gauge his personality. I had heard stories about his leadership style and the impact he was making in the state, and I was curious to get to the roots of truth about them.
As I followed his progress from afar, I was impressed by the vision and impact of the developmental programs which he introduced, particularly in the areas of healthcare and agriculture. The upgrading of medical facilities and the implementation of the “Back to Land” agricultural program were visionary moves that showcased his commitment to the welfare of the people. These initiatives not only improved the lives of the citizens but also left a lasting legacy that continues to inspire today.
That opportunity to meet him in person finally came nearly four decades later when I was appointed Commissioner of Information and Culture in Kebbi State. During my visits to Zuru for official work, I had the privilege of meeting him on several occasions. Each time, I was struck by his fearlessness, sense of duty, and commitment to truth and decency. He was a consummate humanist who stood firm in his convictions, and his warmth and kindness left a lasting impression on me.
I recall the first time we met vividly. He exuded confidence and authority, yet he was approachable and genuinely interested in the welfare of those around him. As I visited him on official business a couple of times thereafter, I was consistently impressed by his enthusiasm and warmth towards me. The memories of our interactions remain etched in my mind, and I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to know him.
General Sami Gomo II’s impact extended beyond his tenure as Military Governor. His legacy continues to inspire and motivate those who knew him and those who benefited from his humanist disposition. As I reflect on his life and achievements, I am reminded of the importance of leadership, vision, and commitment to the welfare of others.
May his legacy continue to inspire future generations.
Allah ya gafarta ma Sarkin Zuru, ameen thumma ameen.
