The Anambra State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has set plans in motion to rebrand the party and improve its electoral fortunes.
This is coming on the heels of the abysmal failure of the party during the 2019 Presidential and National Assembly elections.
The party’s 33,000 votes did not win any seat in both the State and National Assembly polls, despite the array of prominent politicians of Anambra State origin.
According to the state chairman of the party, Chief Basil Ejidike, the rebranding will kick off with a summit to be attended by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, the National Chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, and the party’s lone Senator-elect in the South East geo-political zone, Chief Orji Uzor Kalu.
While inaugurating a committee to handle the rebranding process, Ejidike said that the party expected the committee’s findings to help inject a new lease of life into the Anambra State branch of APC and provide a viable platform that would enable it win elections in the state in future.
The committee, which has Chief C. J. Chinwuba as Chairman and Chief Peter Ogbuka as Secretary, is mandated to find out the roles played by every stakeholder, including the national, state, local government and ward leadership of the party, the party’s agents in the elections, security agencies and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), during the exercise.
“The major essence of a political party, apart from bringing together folks of like minds, is to create a viable and strong platform for winning elections. Therefore, any political organisation whose major aim is not to win election and obtain political power is not worth the name.
“Ours as presently constituted in the state has not shown any difference, which means that there is a missing link somewhere. The fact-finding committee will deeply probe what happened before and during the last general elections, which saw our party lying prostrate and without anything to show for its existence and participation in the elections.
“Therefore, we will want to know the roles played by members for and against the interest and success of the party before and during the elections. If you succeed in your assignment, then it means that APC is on the path to progress in Anambra State,” Ejidike stated.
He said that after the summit, which will take place in April, the leadership of the party would go on a tour of the state so as to sell APC to the grass root and in so doing, reposition it for future elections in Nigeria.
