New Abia Police Commissioner assumes office ahead of today’s polls

Abia Policed Commissioner Awosola Awotinde

A new Commissioner of Police has assumed office in Abia State with the assurance that he would discharge his duties effectively despite being new in the state.

The new State Police boss, Mr. Awosola Awotinde, told journalists in Umuahia shortly after his arrival that he has no problems getting the job done as a professional, despite his relocation and solicited the cooperation of sister agencies in the discharge of their duties in today’s elections.

Awotinde arrived Umuahia Friday morning from Abakaliki the Ebonyi State capital where he had held sway as the Commissioner of Police before he was swapped with the former Abia CP, Mr. Etim Ene Okon, for election duties.

The swapping of the Police chiefs is coming less than 24 hours to the governorship and House of Assembly elections.

Okon who assumed duties in Abia barely one month ago, replaced Mr. Chris Ezike, who was recently promoted to the rank of Assistant Inspector-General of Police.

Okon had on Thursday participated in a stakeholders meeting where he and the Deputy Inspector-General (DIG) in charge of the South East, Anthony Ogbizi, spoke on strategies and level of preparedness of the state Police Command with respect to the governorship and House of Assembly elections in the state.

Abia’s new CP, Awotinde, as part of taking over the Command, met with the heads of all the sister security agencies in the state on arrival at the Bende Road Police headquarters in Umuahia for familiarisation purposes.

He also visited the State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Joseph Iloh, to intimate him of the top security changes and assured him of the readiness of the Police to discharge their duties effectively during the polls.
