Group warns against post-election violence, foreign interference

A non-governmental organisation, Project Nigeria Group, on Monday warned against any form of violence in the aftermath of the 2019 Presidential and National Assembly polls.

The group, which spoke through its Secretary, Abdulwahab Ekekhide, also warned against foreign interference in the nation’s electoral process, adding that Nigeria, as a sovereign nation, should be allowed to determine its political future.

The Secretary, who was joined by other executive members of the group, blamed the current tension in the polity on foreign interference as well as attitude of some Nigerians, who according to him, lack a deep sense of patriotism.

“The tension emanated from international interference in Nigeria’s electoral process by some foreign Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in conjunction with some embassies and the political class,” the group said. It therefore advised the political players to sheath their swords and embrace the spirit of sportsmanship, saying it is noteworthy that elections must be won and lost.

It emphasised: “We expect the diplomatic missions and their agents among the electoral monitors, to observe diplomatic ethics and decorum. The Nigeria nation is greater than selfish interests of any particular person or group of persons.”

The group said that Nigeria is not ready for another civil war, adding that “countries like Liberia, Congo, Sierra Leone are recent examples. Nigeria should offer these trouble-makers a deaf ear to enable us live in peace.”

Project Nigeria said that such interference is contrary to the peaceful coexistence and development of the country adding: “These people can cause crisis and escape from Nigeria, as is the norm anytime they brew crisis in other countries.”
