Poll Shift: Don’t lose faith in INEC, Bishop Ezeokafor urges Nigerians

Most Reverend Paulinus Ezeokafor

The Catholic Bishop of Awka Diocese, His Lordship Most Reverend Paulinus Ezeokafor, has urged Nigerians not to lose faith in the ability of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to give the country a credible election.

He stressed that in the face of the challenges from the sudden postponement of the presidential and National Assembly elections, Nigerians should not place personal gains above the interest of the nation.

The Prelate enjoined voters to endeavour to come back on Saturday to vote for leaders who have interest of the masses at heart.

Bishop Ezeokafor made the call at the Retreat & Pastoral Center, Nodu Okpuno, in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State, while reacting to the election postponement.

According to him, it is better to have a delay and get it right than rushing to get it wrong.

While noting that never has it been heard that election was postponed on the exact day it was scheduled to hold, the bishop said: “Nigerians should see it as a duty that must be fulfilled for the betterment of the citizens.

“The development came to me as a shock. The situation has caused a lot of financial loss to many Nigerians, especially those who travelled from far and near to be a part of the process.

“INEC should prove their worth by organising an election that would be devoid of rancour, preference, and to conduct an election that will be free, fair and credible, as Nigerians and international organisations are looking up to them to get it right this time around.

“Awka diocese, through my directive, has been on special prayers since the eight of this month for the election to be successful, and will continue till the end for the results to be achieved.”

The Bishop further cautioned against vote buying and selling, describing it as mortal sin.

He also noted that nothing is worth mortgaging one’s conscience for, even as he advised against violence which he said has never helped any situation.

He advised people to be predetermined on whom to vote for, so as not to be deceived, saying that no sacrifice will be too much as long as the aim is achieved.
