The Imo State Government has reiterated its readiness to grant amnesty to deserving prison inmates whose offences cannot be proved beyond reasonable doubts.

This was disclosed in Owerri by Governor Rochas Okorocha while handing over financial assistance to the management of Owerri Prison. Governor Okorocha, represented by his Special Adviser on Justice and Social Fairness, Barr. Obinwa Etukemka, said that the money was for the provision of drugs, clothes and other necessary items to the inmates. He also assured that those suffering from any form of ailment would be treated.

The governor said the proposed amnesty was part of its programme to decongest the prisons. He disclosed that gone were the days when Owerri Prison was filled to the brim without government granting pardon to deserving inmates whose cases were either awaiting trial beyond the jail term the accused would have served if convicted or lack any evidence that would lead to their conviction.

Okorocha frowned at a situation where inmates die in prison over minor issues that would have been resolved amicably while female inmates deliver while still in custody. He appealed to the management to always report such cases for government’s prompt intervention.

The governor advised the youths to make good use of the free education provided by the state government and shun any form crime to avoid being rusticated.
