The Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court at The Hague, Netherlands, is considering the request of Nigeria’s International Society for Civil Liberties & the Rule of Law (Intersociety) to intervene, investigate and prosecute those guilty of crimes against humanity in the country in connection with the Boko Haram insurgency.
This indication was given yesterday in an acknowledgement letter to Intersociety Board Chairman, Comrade Emeka Umeagbalasi, signed by M.P. Dillon, Head of Information & Evidence Unit, Office of The Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court.
“This communication has been duly entered in the Communications Register of the Office. We
will give consideration to this communication, as appropriate, in accordance with the provisions of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court,” Dillon said in reply to the two-part letter to President Goodluck Jonathan by Intersociety, dated May 29 and 31, 2014, which the group copied the ICC.
“As soon as a decision is reached, we will inform you, in writing, and provide you with
reasons for this decision,” Dillion further said in reply to the letter entitled ‘Boko Haram Terror & Other Unlawful Killings: A Demand For Presidential Invitation Of The Chief Prosecutor For International Criminal Court For Investigation & Prosecution Of Crimes Against Humanity, War Crimes & Related Others-Parts 1 & 2’.
Contacted last night by News Express, Umeagbalasi confirmed receipt of ICC’s reply. He disclosed that the concluding part of the letter to President Jonathan would be released this week and would equally be copied ICC.
