In yet another justification of the Igbo saying that “Agaracha (wanderer or runaway) must come back”, Interim Deputy National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mallam Nasir el-Rufai, is expected to surrender himself to the State Security Service (SSS) possibly this morning.
It is however not yet clear whether he will report to the SSS headquarters in Abuja as requested by the Nigerian secret police or make himself available in his Abuja residence, from which he fled and went underground after spurning the SSS summons.
The former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) had been invited last Thursday by SSS in connection with a newspaper interview in which he predicted bloody general elections next year but he insisted that he would not honour the invitation except the SSS obtained a court warrant. He thereafter disappeared from his Maitama home in the Nigerian capital and could not be traced by SSS operatives who stormed the place on Friday. El-Rufai was also not in his second Abuja house at Imani Estate when the SSS operatives went there to look for him.
Sunday Tribune yesterday quoted an SSS source as saying that the loquacious politician had been traced to his hideout in the home of his friend at Ministers’ Hill, Maitama, Abuja, and that the friend, a lawyer, had promised to turn him in this morning.
However, LEADERSHIP this morning quoted a source close to the former FCT minister as saying last night: “I can tell you authoritatively that el-Rufai will make himself available to the SSS at his residence at his Mambilla Street residence in Abuja at about 8am.”
