Patrick Dorgu and Joshua Zirkzee scored in second-half stoppage time as Manchester United twice recovered from two goals down in a thrilling 4-4 draw with Aston Villa.
Having dropped into the relegation zone after Nottingham Forest's 3-1 victory over Manchester City on Saturday, United found themselves behind after 59 seconds and two down within four minutes, with Alysson and Nicolas Jackson scoring for Villa.
By half-time it was 2-2, with Bruno Fernandes converting a penalty and Youri Tielemans scoring against his former club.
United made a similarly slow start to the second half, with John McGinn and Leon Goretzka giving Villa another two-goal lead, but once again, they could not hold on.
Dorgu was the saviour off the bench, as he teed up fellow substitute Zirkzee before heading home himself, though United will still spend the international break in the relegation zone.
How the match unfolded
Man Utd head coach Michael Carrick did not get the positive start he desired, as Villa midfielder McGinn worked the ball to Alysson, and though the 20-year-old's shot was straight down the middle, it squirmed in through goalkeeper Senne Lammens' legs.
Villa struck again from their next attack, with Jackson sweeping into an empty net after Lammens parried another Alysson effort.
United responded positively, though, with Fernandes getting a goal back from the penalty spot in the 16th minute, after Boubacar Kamara fouled Matheus Cunha.
The Red Devils laid siege to Villa 'keeper Zion Suzuki's goal for the rest of the first half, with Cunha's curled shot being clawed away from the top-right corner and Amad going close on three occasions.
United finally got their reward in the 44th minute, with Tielemans squeezing a left-footed finish past Suzuki after being picked out by Noussair Mazraoui.
Alysson missed a chance to restore Villa's lead in first-half stoppage time, but the Brazilian remained a threat as he led their fast start after the interval, winning a penalty after being fouled by Diogo Dalot, which McGinn dispatched on 48 minutes.
And United's defence was in disarray again in the 53rd minute. Leny Yoro headed McGinn's free-kick against his own crossbar, and the ensuing scramble ended with Goretzka lashing a shot into an unguarded goal.
Mason Mount hit the woodwork after coming on for Man Utd, but Zirkzee teed up a grandstand finish when he applied a crisp finish to Dorgu's cross in the second added minute.
And there was one final twist to come, as Dorgu rose highest inside a crowded six-yard box, meaning United are one point above bottom club Crystal Palace in 18th, while Villa sit 10th. (premierleague.com)
