Governor Nwifuru
By CHARLES IWUOHA
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ebonyi State has raised the alarm over the unabated wave of violence, killings and insecurity involving Ebonyians and the silence of the state government questions Governor Francis Nwifuru’s commitment to protect lives and property.
The Opposition party said that the primary responsibility of every responsible government to Protect lives and property, saying that it is a constitutional obligation that cannot be sacrificed on the altar of political calculations, party interests or electoral ambitions.
This was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday by spokesperson to the PDP’s governorship candidate in Ebonyi state, Chief Emmanuel Igwe and made available to Journalists in Abakaliki.
According to the statement, “Unfortunately, the recent developments suggest that Ebonyi State may be witnessing a worrying failure of leadership in this critical responsibility.”
The statement stated that the growing political influence and campaign momentum of Dr. Ifeanyi Chukwuma Odii, the PDP governorship have unsettled Governor Francis Nwifuru to the extent that governance and security concerns are gradually taking a back seat.
The party further maintained that the violent confrontation surrounding an alleged attack on the convey of Barrister Rollins Offia Nwali, who is vying for the state House of Assembly for Ezza South, under the platform of Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), which resulted to the loss of human lives.
The statement reads in part: “Even condemning the killings, expressing sympathy to affected families and assuring Ebonyians of government intervention would have demonstrated concern. Unfortunately, the apparent absence of such visible action is becoming difficult to explain.
“Is Governor Nwifuru waiting for political opponents to take responsibility for the safety of Ebonyians? Has the business of campaigning overshadowed the business of governance?
“There are growing political conversations suggesting that Odii’s rising profile has put the incumbent under considerable pressure.
“Some may interpret the governor’s apparent silence as political exhaustion, while others may wonder whether he has quietly abandoned the contest. These are questions that only the governor can answer.
“Governor Nwifuru must understand that history will not judge him merely by the number of political endorsements he secures or campaign structures he establishes, but also by how he responds when the lives of the people he governs are threatened.”
