Paris Saint-Germain winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia is expected to miss the remainder of the season after rupturing the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee during Tuesday's 4-2 Champions League victory against Barcelona, the French club confirmed Wednesday.
PSG said the 25-year-old Georgian international would undergo surgery in the coming days following the injury at the Parc des Princes.
"Having suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during yesterday's match against FC Barcelona, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia is set to undergo surgery in the coming days," the club said in a statement.
Although PSG did not provide a timetable for his return, ACL injuries typically require months of rehabilitation, making Kvaratskhelia unlikely to be featured again this season.
The Georgian winger injured his right knee after landing awkwardly while attempting to tackle Barcelona's Xavi Espart early in the second half. He was helped off the pitch shortly before the hour mark, unable to put weight on his right leg.
Kvaratskhelia, who joined PSG from Napoli in January 2025, was named the 2025-26 UEFA Champions League Player of the Season after helping the Parisian side secure its second consecutive European title.
Kvaratskhelia shared an emotional statement on Instagram following the diagnosis, expressing his disappointment and determination to return stronger.
"It hasn't been a long time, but it's still on my mind - why me anyway?" he wrote, explaining that he had prepared extensively for the match but never anticipated suffering that injury.
The Georgia international said he was ready to endure the difficult recovery, describing the months ahead as a period of hard work, pain and tears.
"I know I have to come back stronger for my people who always have my back, I won't let you down I promise I won't waste a second," he added.
PSG also confirmed that Ousmane Dembele and captain Marquinhos will be out for several weeks after sustaining thigh injuries during the Barcelona match.
Dembele, who was substituted in the first half, suffered a left thigh injury. Marquinhos sustained a right thigh injury.
Both will remain under treatment in the coming weeks, according to the club.
The injury setbacks come as Luis Enrique's side seeksto defend their Champions League title, having won all three of their opening matches in the competition this season. (AA)
