Ex-banker Chukwuebuka Nweke
The Lagos State High Court sitting in Ikeja has convicted a former banker, Chukwuebuka Nweke, over the unauthorised withdrawal of ₦1 million from a customer’s bank account.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) secured the conviction on Monday, October 19, 2026, before Justice Ismail Ijelu.
The commission disclosed that Nweke was found guilty of unlawfully accessing a desktop computer assigned to a colleague to facilitate the withdrawal.
According to the EFCC, investigations revealed that Nweke, on June 21, 2025, in Lagos, accessed a desktop computer assigned to Emmanuella Anyanwu without lawful authority, thereby facilitating the unauthorised withdrawal of ₦1 million from an account belonging to Leelee Dumbari.
The account was domiciled with one of the new-generation banks.
The offence is contrary to Section 386(1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
Following the investigation, the EFCC’s Lagos Zonal Directorate 1 arraigned Nweke on a one-count charge bordering on the unlawful withdrawal of ₦1 million from Dumbari’s account.
He pleaded not guilty to the charge, leading to a full trial.
During the proceedings, the prosecution counsel, M.K. Bashir, called five witnesses to establish the case against the defendant, while the defence called one witness.
Delivering judgment, Justice Ijelu found Nweke guilty as charged and sentenced him to pay a fine of ₦1 million within 30 days.
The court ruled that failure to pay the fine within the stipulated period would result in his remand in a correctional centre for six months. (New Telegraph, excluding headline)
