Brighton & Hove Albion blew away Premier League champions Arsenal in stunning fashion.

Completing an extraordinary week – in which they thrashed Coventry City and came from two goals behind to beat Manchester United in the EFL Cup – the Seagulls downed the defending champions for a third season in a row.

After beating Liverpool last season and Manchester City in 2024/25, Brighton wiped out Arsenal’s perfect start and denied Mikel Arteta’s side the chance to win their first eight games of the season for the first time in 123 years.

The Premier League’s most potent attack – Brighton have now scored 16 goals in five matches – overpowered the league’s strongest defence, with Arsenal having conceded only once before kick-off.

"We won the ball high up and attacked really fast," Brighton midfielder Pascal Gross told BBC Match of the Day. "After the last two wins we are full of confidence and wanted to finish really strong before the international break."

Wearing a one-off kit to celebrate Brighton’s 125th anniversary, 35-year-old Gross scored his fourth goal in five games to open the scoring before Charalampos Kostoulas, the 19-year-old forward, added his third goal in three matches. Deadline-day signing Chema Andres registered his first Brighton goal on his first start.

It was the first time Arsenal lost by three goals in the Premier League since a 3-0 defeat to, by coincidence, Brighton in May 2023.

"Credit to Brighton for what they have done," said Arsenal manager Arteta. "I think we were very far from our level. The international break means we have more time to swallow because it's very, very painful."

Emery jinx over Spurs earns Villa first win

Aston Villa’s Unai Emery continued his jinx over Tottenham Hotspur as he edged Robert De Zerbi in the battle of two winless managers, even if Spurs scored their first Premier League goals of the season.

Emery has now masterminded three wins in three visits to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium since the start of last season.

Villa striker Nicolas Jackson, who signed from Chelsea in the summer, also continued to torment Spurs with his fifth goal in five appearances against them.

Making his first start since moving from Freiburg, the impressive Johan Manzambi put Villa ahead in first-half stoppage time then teed up Jackson to become only the second player to score and assist on his Villa debut – a feat last achieved by Kevin Phillips 21 years ago.

An Emiliano Buendia beauty – a dipping drive into the left corner that left a young Villa fan stupefied – gave Villa a three-goal cushion.

"We waited for our moment to threaten them, and we were clinical," Emery said.

Spurs looked destined for a fifth straight league game without scoring until Conor Gallagher struck with four minutes remaining. It halted a run of 540 minutes without a Premier League goal, surpassing their previous longest goalless league run – 467 minutes – from 20 years ago.

Jan Paul van Hecke headed in a second deep in stoppage time, but it came too late. Two points and a goal difference of -6 from five matches marks Spurs’ worst start to a season – eclipsing the two points and -3 goal difference they had at the same stage of the 2008/09 campaign. Although they finished eighth that season.

Spurs captain Micky van de Ven told TNT Sports, "There are things that are not acceptable and we have to do better." De Zerbi will be hoping the international break will provide a chance to improve.

Dasilva ends Coventry drought in style

Coventry City ended a 25-year wait for a Premier League goal to halt a run of four straight defeats and claim their first win of the season.

Jay Dasilva picked an opportune moment to score his first Coventry goal in 127 appearances for the club – and the promoted side’s first league goal of the campaign.

"I've been waiting a while, the lads have been giving me stick for a long time, so I'm happy it came today and gave us the win," Dasilva told BBC Match of the Day.

Sky Blues goalkeeper Carl Rushworth launched a long pass forward and Dasilva took a brilliant first touch before finishing adroitly.

It was also the first time a 'keeper had assisted their team’s first goal of a Premier League season since Manchester United's Peter Schmeichel in the inaugural Premier League season of 1992, setting up Mark Hughes.

Coventry head coach Frank Lampard joked on Sky Sports that they had worked on that exact pass in training.

"I feel great, I feel amazing," Lampard added. "The way the players worked for it. It’s a tough place to come, we knew that having lost our first four games all in different circumstances it's easy to think negatively and think where is the goal and where is the win coming from?

"The reality in football is you have to fight for it, you have to work for it, you have to have organisation."

Everton continue their historic start

Everton head into the international break unbeaten after hanging on to a one-goal lead against 10-man Ipswich Town.

For only the third time this century, Everton are unbeaten in their first seven games of a season, following Carlo Ancelotti in 2020/21 and current manager David Moyes during his first spell at the club, back in 2006/07.

Thierno Barry scored his fifth goal in seven matches, diverting James Tarkowski’s long-range effort in the 11th minute, but Everton needed goalkeeper Jordan Pickford to preserve their lead.

"I'm very happy to score again today," said Barry. "We need to keep working with that, and hopefully we'll go again."

Pickford made sharp saves from Emersonn, Abdul Fatawu, Julio Enciso and Abdoul Ouattara.

Fatawu, 22, was sent off for two yellow cards – the second for diving – only the third Premier League dismissal for simulation in six years.

"He's a young lad and he's learning," Ipswich defender Leif Davis told the Premier League. "It was a big challenge to go a man down away from home but the boys who came on put a good shift in."

Newcastle recover to bring Hull back down to earth

Harvey Barnes became the first Newcastle United player to record two assists in the opening seven minutes of a Premier League match as they ended Hull City’s unbeaten start to the season.

Winger Barnes slipped in Joe Willock to fire Newcastle ahead in the third minute, before another incisive pass freed Lewis Hall to score from a tight angle four minutes later.

Hull, this season’s surprise package after beating Man Utd and Coventry then holding Villa and Chelsea to draws, refused to crumble.

They pounded Newcastle’s goal with 21 shots, pulling a goal back through Mohamed-Ali Cho and pushing hard for an equaliser.

"I am very proud of the team and the way they fought," Hull head coach Sergej Jakirovic told BBC Match of the Day. "This is our mentality, our character."

Newcastle head coach Matthias Jaissle praised his side’s resilience after they recovered from Monday’s 4-1 defeat at Leeds United.
