Apple retail workers in Italy went on strike on Friday over working conditions as the company’s iPhone 18 Pro went on sale worldwide.

The strike was organised by the Filcams CGIL, Fisascat CISL and Uiltucs trade unions, with workers staging demonstrations outside Apple stores in Rome, Milan and other major cities.

More than 1,600 employees across 17 Apple stores were involved in the strike, according to Fisascat CISL. Workers were expected to stop work for their entire shifts as part of the nationwide action.

The industrial action coincided with the launch of the iPhone 18 Pro, which Apple unveiled last week alongside the Duo, its first foldable smartphone. The Duo is scheduled to go on sale on October 23.

Apple said its retail and online stores would continue operating despite the strike.

“Our retail and online stores are operating today, and we look forward to welcoming our customers as usual,” the spokesperson said.

Apple’s online store lists the iPhone 18 Pro at a starting price of €1,489 ($1,710) in Italy.

The unions said the launch of new iPhone models increases pressure on retail workers, with staff facing heavier workloads and increasingly unclear job responsibilities.

Filcams CGIL said discussions with employees had highlighted worsening working conditions and insufficient attention to workers’ wellbeing.

The unions are demanding a shared recruitment plan, permanent contracts for some fixed-term workers and the option for part-time employees to voluntarily increase their working hours.

Fisascat CISL said the launch of the new iPhone generation would increase activity in Apple stores and called for adequate staffing to prevent additional pressure on employees.

Apple said it provides its retail workforce with competitive compensation and benefits, including private medical, dental and vision coverage, as well as mental health and wellness support. (AriseNews TV)
