The Lagos State Police Command has arrested four suspects in connection with the alleged mob killing of Basit Kolade, who was beaten to death by a group of men on Lagos Island, weeks before his wedding.

Kolade, who had recently returned to Nigeria ahead of his wedding scheduled for later this month, was allegedly attacked around Freeman Street, Lagos Island, on September 2, 2026, following an altercation involving his vehicle and a motorcycle.

The spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, SP Abimbola Adebisi, who confirmed the incident, said Kolade was returning from Ebute Metta with his female companion, identified simply as Ayanda, when the incident occurred.

According to her, the deceased and Ayanda were travelling towards Lagos Island in their black Lexus Jeep, with registration number KSF 115 JZ, when a motorcycle allegedly ran into the vehicle from behind.

Adebisi said Kolade reportedly confronted the rider and demanded an explanation for the collision.

She said: “In the process, Basit allegedly reversed the vehicle and hit the motorcycle, causing the rider and the motorcycle to fall.

“Following the incident, a group of boys allegedly emerged from the area and attacked Basit with dangerous weapons, while his woman was reportedly rescued by some women in the area.”

The police spokesperson said Kolade was subsequently rushed to the Lagos Island General Hospital, where he received medical attention but was later confirmed dead.

Adebisi disclosed that four suspects had so far been arrested in connection with the incident, adding that investigations were ongoing to unravel the circumstances surrounding the killing.

The incident has raised concerns over the continued resort to mob action and jungle justice, particularly in disputes arising from road incidents and other disagreements.

The command condemned the killing and warned members of the public against taking the law into their own hands.

“The Command strongly condemns the incident and warns members of the public against resorting to mob action, jungle justice, or any form of self-help.

“No individual or group has the right to take the law into their own hands. Anyone found culpable in the attack, including those who participated in the alleged mob action, will be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law,” Adebisi said.

The police urged members of the public to allow law enforcement agencies to handle disputes and suspected offences, warning that participation in mob attacks could attract criminal prosecution.

Kolade’s death occurred just weeks before his planned wedding, for which he had reportedly returned to Nigeria to make preparations. (Vanguard, excluding headline)
