By BONIFACE AKARAH
Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has mourned the death of Dotun Oladipo, describing the late journalist and publisher as a courageous professional who made lasting contributions to Nigeria’s online media and democratic development.
Oladipo, publisher of The Eagle Online and former President of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP), died on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, at the age of 56.
Obi, in a condolence message, said he received the news of Oladipo’s death “with profound sadness,” describing it as a painful loss to his family, the journalism profession, the media community and Nigeria.
“Dotun was a courageous and committed professional who dedicated his life to journalism, public enlightenment, and the defence of truth and democratic values,” Obi said.
The former governor said Oladipo’s contribution went beyond his work as a journalist and publisher, noting his role in the development of Nigeria’s growing online media industry.
“Through his journalism and leadership, he made a lasting contribution to the growth of Nigeria’s online media and the strengthening of our democracy,” Obi said.
He described the death as “a painful loss to his family, the journalism profession, the media community, and Nigeria as a whole.”
Obi extended his condolences to Oladipo’s family, colleagues and friends, as well as the wider Nigerian media community.
“I extend my deepest condolences to his family, colleagues, friends, and the entire Nigerian media community,” he said.
He also prayed for strength for those mourning the late publisher and for the repose of his soul.
“May God grant them the strength to bear this irreparable loss and grant Dotun Oladipo eternal rest,” Obi said.
Oladipo served as President of GOCOP from 2017 to 2021, during a formative period in the development of online publishing in Nigeria.
His death has continued to attract tributes from colleagues, media organisations and public figures who have remembered his contribution to journalism and the growth of digital media in the country.
