The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Borno State chapter, has called on churches across the state to embark on a three-day fasting and prayer programme for the safe release of 78 schoolchildren abducted by Boko Haram terrorists in Askira-Uba Local Government Area.

The children were abducted from their schools more than two months ago, according to the Christian body.

CAN said the fasting and prayers would also seek the release of other captives abducted in Ngoshe, Gwoza Local Government Area, as well as those kidnapped along the Biu-Buratai Road while travelling to Maiduguri in April 2026.

In a statement issued by the State CAN Secretary, Senior Apostle Joshua Akeredolu Michael, and obtained by our correspondent in Maiduguri on Saturday, the association said the three-day programme was themed: “A Call For Three Days Fasting And Prayers For the Safe Return of Our Kidnapped Brethren.”

The statement said the state CAN leadership, under Most Rev. Dr. John Bogna Bakeni, had declared the fasting and prayers for kidnapped Christians and other victims in Mussa, Lassa in Askira-Uba, Ngoshe, Biu-Buratai Road and other parts of the state.

Akeredolu said the initiative was necessary to enable Christians across the state to seek divine intervention for the release of the victims, who remained in captivity.

He said the fasting and prayers would commence on Friday, and end on Sunday, August 16, 2026, with individual churches expected to hold the programme in their respective congregations and conclude it during Sunday services.

“All church leaders are urged to encourage members to key into this fasting and prayers, as we serve a living God that answers prayers,” he said.

CAN also called on relevant security agencies as well as the state and Federal Governments to intensify efforts to secure the safe release of all kidnapped victims in Borno State. (LEADERSHIP)
