Mayowa Adejoorin and Gov Adeleke
The Commissioner for Environment and Sanitation in Osun State, Hon. Mayowa Adejoorin, has been arrested.
Reacting to the development, the Imole Campaign Council (TICC), which is driving the re-election bid of Governor Ademola Adeleke under the Accord Party, strongly condemned the arrest.
The council alleged that 62 members of the party are currently facing detention across various facilities nationwide.
TICC spokesperson Pelumi Olajengbesi asserted that the detention of Accord Party members will not prevent the defeat of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the upcoming August 15 governorship election.
Olajengbesi described the manner of the commissioner’s arrest as deeply disturbing.
“We consider what happened to Hon. Adejoorin nothing short of a bandit-like abduction carried out under the cover of police authority.
“We are deeply concerned that these arrests may be connected to an attempt to create an environment conducive to electoral manipulation in Ijesaland ahead of the August 15 governorship election,” Olajengbesi said.
He further claimed that Hon. Adejoorin was targeted solely because he rebuffed overtures to defect to the APC.
“Hon. Mayowa was approached to support the APC, but he refused, and he was subsequently arrested. These are very serious allegations that deserve immediate explanation and investigation,” Olajengbesi said.
Vowing strong political resistance, the TICC spokesperson declared that the APC chairman would not secure a single vote and that the APC governorship candidate would lose his polling unit.
He urged the residents of Obokun to reject intimidation and abuse of power at the ballot box, maintaining that no citizen should be harassed on account of their political affiliation.
The campaign council demanded the immediate and unconditional release of Hon. Adejoorin, stating that there is no lawful or credible basis for his continued detention.
Osun State Police Command confirmed the arrest.
The command’s spokesperson, Abiodun Ojelabi, stated that police operatives were immediately deployed to the scene of an incident in Ilesa.
He said the area was cordoned off, and several exhibits, including expanded cartridges and Amotekun personnel caps, were recovered.
“Immediately the incident was reported, our personnel moved to the scene, cordoned off the area before some exhibit were recovered which included expanded cartridges, Amotekun personnel caps.
“Also, Mr Adejoorin was arrested the scene and has been taken to the command for questioning as part of the investigation process,” Ojelabi added.
He said the police is gathering information on the incident. (The Sun)
