By EDEKI IGAFE
The Police Command in Delta has arrested three suspects over alleged torture of a resident in Emevor Community, Isoko North Local Government Area of the state.
Spokesman for the command, SP Bright Edafe disclosed this in statement on Friday in Warri.
Edafe said the suspects were: a community leader and members of a vigilante group in Emevor community.
He said the suspects had consequently been arraigned before a competent court for prosecution.
Edafe said the trio were apprehended at the directives of the Commissioner of Police in charge of the command, Mr Yemi Oyeniyi.
According to him, the commissioner of police directed the Area Commander, Ozoro Area Command, to conduct a swift and discreet investigation on a viral video showing the alleged torture of the victim.
“The incident, which was captured in a video widely circulated on social media, immediately drew the attention of the CP who directed the area commander to conduct a swift and discreet investigation.
“The investigation was further reinforced by a petition from concerned human rights activists.
“The petition established that the suspects, others now at large, unlawfully apprehended the victim and took him to a hotel in Emevor Community, where he was allegedly subjected to severe humiliation and physical assault.
“Upon conclusion of investigations, the suspects have been arraigned before a competent court on charges of conspiracy to commit felony, assault occasioning harm, conduct likely to cause a breach of the peace and among others,” he said.
The police spokesman said that effort was on course to arrest the other suspects in connection with the crime.
Edafe said the commissioner of police had warned that anyone, who violated the law would be prosecuted, and urged vigilante groups to always hand over suspects to the police for lawful investigation and prosecution. (NAN)
