Opposition politicians and members of political parties in Lagos State have raised concerns over what they described as exorbitant signage and outdoor advertising fees ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The stakeholders said the high charges imposed on campaign billboards, posters and other political advertisements could place opposition parties and less-funded candidates at a disadvantage as political activities intensify.
They urged the Lagos State Government and relevant regulatory agencies to review the fees and introduce a more affordable framework for political advertising.
According to them, the cost of securing permits and placing campaign materials has risen significantly, making it difficult for candidates without substantial financial backing to compete effectively for public attention.
Daily Trust reports that the state Signage and Advertisement Agency (LASAA) reviewed its rate in February.
Checks by our correspondent indicated that as the campaign for the National Assembly and presidential elections kicked off this week, many opposition candidates have not placed any signboard.
A check on the updated LASAA rate released in February 2026 indicated that individuals and institutions pay millions of naira depending on the size of the advertisement and the zone.
Some billboards cost as much as N4.9million especially some erected around the Murtala Muhammed International Airport.
Charges for political adverts on billboards in Lagos depend on the board type, location, and duration, typically ranging from N500,000 to over N5,000,000 per month.
The Lagos State Signage and Advertisement Agency (LASAA) also charges a non-refundable application fee of N500,000 per application for outdoor billboard advertisements exceeding 15 square meters.
Opposition members who spoke with our correspondent argued that access to public spaces for political communication should not become a privilege available only to wealthy candidates and established political parties.
A former Chairman of the National Conscience Party (NCP), Comrade Bayo Ogunleye also decried the situation.
“It is a pity we are having this kind of situation. Assuming my party, NCP is on the ballot we would have contested this. We would have challenged them that no, I want to do my advert and I don’t have one naira to pay. We can then go to court. The present political parties are the same, they cannot challenge,” he said.
