The Ondo State Police Command vowed on Tuesday to resist the planned move by cult groups to mark the annual July 7, also known as the ‘7/7‘ celebration, in the state.
According to the command, security operatives have been deployed across identified flashpoints in a bid to prevent any breakdown of law and order in the state.
In a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Abayomi Jimoh, the command warned that any form of procession, gathering or initiation associated with the cult day would be met with decisive action.
Jimoh stated that intelligence reports indicated that some groups were planning activities capable of threatening public peace and endangering innocent lives.
“Commissioner of Police, CP Felix Ohagwu, has ordered the immediate deployment of robust security assets across strategic locations throughout the state, with operatives placed on red alert to intercept any unlawful assembly before it escalates into violence.
“The deployment comprises personnel from the Special Anti-Cultism Squad, Anti-Kidnapping Unit, Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), State Intelligence Department, and Mobile Police Force, as well as officers from various Area Commands and Divisions across the state,” he stated.
The command stated that it would not tolerate any unlawful gathering, display of cult insignia, brandishing of weapons, violent procession or any act capable of causing fear or panic among law-abiding residents.
“Parents and guardians are advised to caution their children and wards against associating with unlawful groups or participating in any activity connected with the proposed celebration,” the statement read.
“Proprietors of hotels, lounges, event centres, bars and recreational facilities are equally urged not to permit their premises to be used for any gathering linked to cult-related activities. Anyone found aiding or harbouring criminal elements will be liable to prosecution.”
The command further called on community leaders, youth organisations, transport unions, school authorities and members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly provide credible information on suspicious movements or gatherings to the nearest police station or other security agencies.
While reassuring residents that adequate security measures have been put in place to guarantee the safety of lives and property, the command urged members of the public to go about their lawful businesses without fear. (Guardian)
