NDC Presidential Candidate Peter Obi, ADC chieftain Kenneth Okonkwo
The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has instituted a N5 billion defamation suit against his former political ally and chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Kenneth Okonkwo, over allegations made against him during a television interview.
The suit, filed on Thursday at the Onitsha Judicial Division of the Anambra State High Court, follows Obi’s earlier threat to seek legal redress after demanding a retraction of the allegations, a public apology and N5 billion in damages.Nigerian Business Directory
The dispute stems from comments made by Okonkwo during an appearance on Channels Television, where he alleged that Obi defrauded and extorted N10 million from House of Representatives aspirants of the NDC and manipulated the outcome of the party’s primary election.
Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, had rejected the allegations as false and defamatory, insisting they had damaged his reputation.
Through his legal representatives, he demanded that Okonkwo withdraw the statements, apologise publicly and pay N5 billion in compensation within seven days or face legal action.
Following the expiration of the ultimatum without a resolution, Obi proceeded to file the lawsuit before the Anambra State High Court.
However, Okonkwo has maintained his position.
In a letter dated June 16 and signed by his lawyer, V. I. Uma, the former Nollywood actor and politician said he stood by his statements, arguing that they were made after receiving complaints and briefings from NDC House of Representatives aspirants.
According to Okonkwo, the aspirants alleged that they were defrauded and extorted by the NDC South-East caucus, which he claimed was led by Obi. (Premium Times/PM News)
