Aisha Yesufu
Activist and social commentator, Aisha Yesufu, has withdrawn from the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) senatorial race for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), bringing an end to her bid for the seat ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Aisha Yesufu announced her decision to bow of the FCT senatorial race in a statement issued on Friday, explaining that the party had decided not to conduct primaries for the position.
According to her, the party would only proceed with primary elections for House of Representatives positions in the territory.
Our party has decided not to conduct primaries for the Senatorial seat in FCT Abuja. It however intends to conduct primaries for House of Representatives. Go ahead and make your choice known,” she stated.
The activist urged her supporters to remain calm and focused on what she described as the broader national objective ahead of the 2027 elections.
“I urge each and every one of you to remain calm and focus on the bigger picture, which is the presidential election. Nigeria will be okay,” she said.
Yesufu also appreciated members and supporters of the #AishaForSenate movement for their commitment and support throughout her brief campaign.
She further disclosed plans to visit all six area councils in the FCT in the coming days to appreciate residents for their support and continue engaging with communities on issues affecting the capital city.
“In the coming week, I will be returning to all the six Area Councils, God willing, to appreciate them for the warm welcome and continue to forge ahead for a better FCT,” she added
Yesufu had declared her intention to contest the FCT senatorial seat on May 6 after joining the NDC from the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
At the time, she said her decision to join the race was influenced by her political experience and involvement within the party.
Her withdrawal follows recent speculation that the NDC may have resolved to support another aspirant for the FCT senatorial ticket. However, the party has yet to issue an official statement on the matter.
