The Anambra State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has expelled 30 of its members for dragging the party into several legal actions.
The Publicity Secretary of the APC in the state, Sir Valentine Iyiegbu, disclosed this on Monday while briefing journalists shortly after the meeting of the State Executive Committee (SEC) of the party held in Awka, the state capital.
Among those expelled are some National Assembly aspirants ahead of the 2027 general elections. Investigations revealed that, following their expulsion, the affected aspirants for National Assembly seats may no longer be qualified to participate in the party’s forthcoming primary elections.
Iyiegbu said the action was taken in line with Section 21(5) of the party’s constitution. He said the party deliberated on members who took the party to court, many of whom are also contesting for House of Representatives tickets.
“The matter comes up tomorrow and the SEC states that what the party constitution stipulates will be followed, and that it is outright expulsion under Article 21(5),” he said.
He added that the SEC ratified their expulsion because they did not exhaust internal party mechanisms for resolving disputes.
According to him, the only reprieve for the expelled members is for them to withdraw the cases from court. “It is only when the matters are withdrawn from the court that the party can consider listening to them,” he said.
On the party’s primary elections, he stated that all eleven House of Representatives positions have aspirants, while the three senatorial seats are also being contested, adding that screening committees had been set up to carry out their duties.
The party also ratified the appointment of a five-member Primary Elections Committee headed by the State Organising Secretary, Sir Izuchukwu Okeke. (Nigerian Tribune)
