The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned the proposed street-parking levy for motorists in Lagos State.
In a statement signed by the party’s Publicity Secretary in the state, Dr Adebiyi Philips, the party warned the state government against introducing what it described as an anti-masses initiative, capable of worsening the hardship being faced by residents and motorists.
“The Lagos State Government, through the Parking Authority, recently announced plans to begin charging motorists for parking on designated streets across the state.
“The initiative, according to the government, would commence before the end of 2026, as part of efforts to regulate roadside parking and reduce traffic congestion.
“However, this initiative is laden with bad intentions because it is aimed at further pauperising Lagosians, while also sending the wrong signal about the second-term ambition of President Bola Tinubu in the state,” he stated.
Adebiyi argued that the initiative would place an undue financial burden on Lagosians amid rising living costs.
He questioned why the government introduced such a policy without considering the plight of residents at a time when the economy was already biting hard.
“With this initiative, the Lagos State Government has crossed the red line with another anti-people policy that could negatively affect motorists in the state.
“At a time Nigerians are battling the consequences of economic reforms and struggling to survive, it is unfortunate that the government is introducing another levy to stifle residents.
“Lagos PDP rejects any levy on street parking, just as Lagosians reject indiscriminate charges on motorists,” he said.
Adebiyi added that those behind the policy were disconnected from the realities being faced by ordinary Lagosians.
He, however, called on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to stop the initiative, warning that it could damage the administration’s image and negatively affect President Bola Tinubu politically in Lagos.
“Whatever benefits are inherent in the policy should be pursued without imposing additional charges. We support initiatives that can transform the state, but not policies without a human face,” he added. (The Sun)
