PDP BoT Chair, Sen Adolphus Wabara
Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustees (BoT), Senator Adolphus Wabara, has said the party would not be surrendered to renegades.
Wabara, who stated this at a meeting of the board in Abuja yesterday, urged party leaders to stand firm and resist all machinations from individuals and institutions against the party.
The party leader added that the consent of two-third majority of the members of the PDP National Executive Committee (NEC) has been obtained for a meeting of the party organ scheduled to hold today in Abuja, noting that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has also been notified of the meeting.
In the aftermath of the Supreme Court verdict which upheld the judgment of the Court of Appeal, which nullified the PDP National Convention held in Ibadan last year, and well as the suspension of some party functionaries, last week, Wabara announced that BoT has taken over the leadership of the opposition party.
The party leader had noted that the implication of the judgment was that the opposition party had no effective leadership and stated that a NEC meeting would be convened to appoint a caretaker committee for the PDP.
Inside sources told Daily Sun that barely any last minute change, today’s NEC meeting, which will be superintended by the Wabara led BoT, would appoint a caretaker committee for the PDP.
The PDP became polarised after its national convention on November 15 and 16, 2025 in Ibadan, Oyo State, where a National Working Committee (NWC) led by Tanimu Turaki was elected. The Turaki camp enjoys the support of Governor Seyi Makinde and his Bauchi counterpart, Bala Mohammed.
In the aftermath of the convention, loyalists of the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, set up a caretaker committee to pilot the affairs of the opposition party pending the conduct of a fresh convention.
On March 9, the Court of Appeal, Abuja Division, nullified the Ibadan convention while the Wike camp organised its own convention in Abuja, on March 29 and 30, where it elected a new NWC led by Abdulraham Mohammed.
However, despite the judgment of the apex court last week, the party crisis has persisted. While party leaders aligned with the Makinde camp insist that by virtue of the Supreme Court verdict, which dismissed a cross appeal challenging the judgment of the Court of Appeal on the suspension of some party officials, the PDP has no leadership, the Wike bloc disagrees, stating that Mohammed-led NWC is intact.
However, Wabara, while addressing BoT members, stated that the decision of the board to take over the leadership of the party has averted a leadership vacuum.
“As you are aware, following the judgment of the Supreme Court on Thursday, 30th April, 2026 which stripped our party of a National Working Committee, the Board immediately assumed administrative leadership of the party in line with the empowering provisions of the Constitution of the PDP (As amended in 2017).
“That immediate intervention averted a leadership vacuum in the aftermath of the judgment of the Supreme Court which annulled the 2025 National Convention that produced the Kabiru Turaki-led National Working Committee as well as upheld the suspension of key conveners of the March 29th -30th contentious Convention in Abuja thereby also invalidating that exercise and nullifying its outcome.
“Since the assumption of administrative leadership of our Party, the BoT has been receiving a flurry of solidarity messages and comments by Nigerians from all walks of life whose belief in the PDP remains unshaken in the confidence that our party will emerge triumphant from all challenges we face.
“These messages not only reinforce the fact that Nigerians are with us as always but also strengthen our courage, resolve and determination to overcome the hurdles and lead the charge to rescue our nation from the claws of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the 2027 general elections.”
Recounting the travails of the PDP in recent times, he stated that “the good news is that despite the travails, our Party is still standing strong and can never die.
“I am indeed pleased to inform Nigerians that our party has already secured the statutorily required consent of two-third of the members of the National Executive Committee (NEC) to convene the 103rd NEC meeting tomorrow, Monday, 4th May, 2026 and INEC has also been duly notified.” (The Sun)
