The woman assaulting her daughter
By DEBORAH AKPEDE
The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) has confirmed intervention in a case involving the alleged assault of a 15-year-old girl by her biological mother in Ipaja.
DSVA confirmed this in a statement shared on its official X handle, @Lagosdsva, on Thursday.
The agency said it was alerted to a viral video of the incident on Wednesday and immediately activated the state’s response protocol.
According to DSVA, the survivor was rescued by the Child Protection Unit of the Ministry of Youth and Social Development and placed in a secure shelter.
It said the survivor is receiving care and psychosocial support.
The agency said the suspect was apprehended by officers of the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps and taken to the Ipaja Police Station.
“The case was subsequently transferred to the Family Support Unit of the Ipaja Division under the Lagos State Police Command for investigation.
“Following diligent investigation, the defendant was arraigned on Thursday at Court 23 of the Samuel Ilori Magistrate Court.
“The defendant has been remanded at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre pending legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions,” it stated.
DSVA commended residents and mandated reporters for their swift action, which ensured the survivor’s safety and facilitated timely progression of the case.
Reaffirming the state government’s zero-tolerance stance on child abuse, the agency restated its commitment to protecting survivors and ensuring perpetrators are brought to justice.
It urged residents to report cases of domestic and sexual violence through designated hotlines and official communication channels.
“To report cases, please call: 0-8000-333-333, 0907-733-3426 (Child Protection Unit) or send a DM via our official social media platforms, @lagosdsva,” it stated. (NAN)
