Former Kano State Governor, Shekarau
Former Kano State Governor Ibrahim Shekarau has hinted at the possibility of defecting from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Shekarau gave this indication on Wednesday when he played host to the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, and his delegation at his residence in Kano.
In his remarks at the occasion, Shekarau explained that every option is now open, telling his guests that, “You come at a time when we are making the final preparations to go out of PDP.”
He lamented that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is troubled by many challenges, adding that his intended exit from the party is guided by the best interests of the people of Kano State.
His words: “Let me assure you that my movement, alongside my Shura Council and all other supporters, friends, and well-wishers, is for a Kano-first reason, that is, anything that will make Kano great, that is where I stand.”
In his remarks, Yilwatda stated that the visit was informed by a deep personal respect for Shekarau and a calculated political move aimed at rallying influential northern leaders ahead of forthcoming general elections.
He appealed to Shekarau to join the APC, describing the former governor as one of the pillars of Nigerian politics whose guidance is crucial for electoral success.
“We are here to plead with you to join the APC. We need your experience and leadership to move the party and the nation forward, irrespective of ethnic or religious differences,” he said.
He described Shekarau as “a sincere man and a decent politician” whose experience and national network remain invaluable to Nigeria’s political landscape.
He recalled that the North stood firm in ensuring that former President Muhammadu Buhari was handed a second tenure, pleading that the same principle of fairness should be extended to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
He restated that Kano currently enjoys the highest number of federal political appointments in Northern Nigeria, adding that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains committed to doing more for the state.
Before this visit, Shekarau was reported to have held a private meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and with the Governor of Kano State, Abba Kabiru Yusuf. (The Sun)
