The opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC) has upbraided the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government for not releasing tangible funds to finance the health sector as the world marks World Health Day on Tuesday.
The ADC National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, in a post on his X handle, also highlighted the implications of the ongoing indefinite strike embarked upon by resident doctors.
He said that with the strike, there will be no medical services in tertiary hospitals across Nigeria, thereby leading to avoidable deaths of more Nigerians.
The post, titled “Happy World Health Day!”, read, “Just a reminder: In 2025, the Tinubu-led APC budgeted N218 billion for capital expenditure for the Federal Ministry of Health, but released only N36 million.
“Today, as the world marks World Health Day, resident doctors in Nigeria have declared an indefinite strike over conditions of service, the 5th time since May 2023.
“The implication is clear: there will be no medical services in tertiary hospitals across Nigeria. It means more Nigerians will die avoidable deaths.
“Yet, in one year alone, President Tinubu has spent N34 billion on foreign travel.
“And for 2027, the same government has budgeted N135 billion for election litigation.
“This affliction too shall pass.”
On Saturday, the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) declared an indefinite nationwide strike over the Federal Government’s plan to stop the implementation of the revised Professional Allowance Table (PAT).
Shuaibu Ibrahim, NARD’s Secretary-General, who announced the decision after the association’s virtual Extraordinary National Executive Council (NEC), said the strike, scheduled to begin at 12 am on Tuesday, April 7, was decided following the government’s plans to halt the allowance framework earlier agreed with the doctors.
