University of Port Harcourt main gate
Tension erupted in a lecture hall at the University of Port Harcourt after a female student, whose identity has yet to be confirmed, confronted a senior lecturer, Professor Emmanuel Wonah, over alleged insults.
The exact cause of the altercation is still unclear at the time of filing this report, however, in a viral video circulating online, the lecturer was seen preventing the student from accessing the lecture hall.
At one point, the lecturer appeared to physically push the student who was holding a laminated booklet following a heated verbal exchange but other students present quickly intervened, preventing the situation from escalating further. During the confrontation, the visibly aggrieved student, reportedly described by some as a “carryover” student, was heard saying, “Oga, don’t insult me.”
An alumnus of the institution, Jennifer Aaron, defended the lecturer, stating: “I know this lecturer, very sound and intelligent. Calm and composed. Teaches very well with clarity.
How dare this student disrespect him?” Another commenter, Queen Obasi, expressed surprise at the development, saying: “What has my lecturer done to her? I know him to be a calm man.” Similarly, Jacob Pam criticized the student’s approach, arguing that she should have reported the matter through appropriate institutional channels. She said, “No matter what, students need to learn to respect authority.
There is a Students’ Affairs Department to handle such complaints rather than resorting to confrontation.” As of press time, the university management has yet to issue an official statement on the incident. (Saturday Independent)
