Former Common Wealth Sec Gen, Emeka Anyaoku
By MONDAY AJOGUN
Mr Stanley Nkwoka, Chairman, Idemili North Local Government Council of Anambra has renamed the famous Limca Road after Chief Emeka Anyaoku, a former Commonwealth Secretary-General.
Nkwoka, while addressing the audience on Wednesday, said the Limca Road would now be known as Ichie Emeka Anyaoku Road.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Limca Road connects Awka Old Road, Nkpor Junction, Onitsha-Awka-Enugu Expressway and Obosi-Umuoji Road, among others.
The LG boss said that renaming the road would serve as an honour and a reminder of Anyaoku’s selfless contributions to the community.
Nkwoka explained that the council embarked on the journey of honouring the former commonwealth secretary-general to inspire future generations to emulate his values, work ethics, and commitment to excellence.
He noted that the renaming of the road passed through legislative processes at the council and it was adopted and passed into law.
He said, “We are celebrating Anyaoku today by renaming the Limca Road to Ichie Emeka Anyaoku Road, because he is a great example to the society.
“He is being held in high esteem across the world for his contributions to the community, nation and international affairs.
“Time has passed when we celebrate those with blemish characters or those who sprayed money in public spaces.
“We are going to erect a bold signboard to give people the direction that the road has been renamed.
“This honour by his community is necessary even though the diplomat has received several global recognitions.
“But we are honouring this great son of Idemili by naming this road after him as a fitting tribute to his legacy”.
Also speaking, the former Minister of Aviation, Chief Osita Chidoka, described Anyaoku, an indigene of Obosi in Idemili, as a “man worthy of emulation”.
Chidoka noted that Anyaoku did not only serve as a commonwealth secretary-general, but did the job without any blemish, and the Queen of England confirmed his integrity.
In his remarks, the President-General, Obosi Development Union Worldwide, Mr Chimezie Obi, who responded on behalf of Anyaoku, appreciated the local government for the honour, describing it as the most cherished among the recognitions received.
Obi said the recognition was well deserved, adding that Anyaoku’s contributions to the community, nation, and the world at large were immeasurable. (NAN)
