Obi Cubana and Anyidons
•Helping others should not depend on tribe, origin, or personal gain
By ODIMEGWU ONWUMERE
Acts of generosity often shape lives in ways that statistics alone cannot fully capture. Yet personal testimonies sometimes reveal the real impact of help, mentorship, and philanthropy more clearly than any formal report.
A reflection shared by Nigerian highlife musician Anyidons on March 18, 2024, offers a powerful case study of how one person’s willingness to help another—without regard to origin or prior relationship—can transform not only an individual career but also inspire a wider culture of giving.
In his message, Anyidons recalled how his professional journey changed through the support of businessman and philanthropist Obi Cubana. Although Anyidons is from Mbano in Imo State and had no personal or family relationship with Obi Cubana beforehand who hails from Oba, Anambra state – the businessman chose to support him. The connection itself emerged through other influential figures in the Nigerian entertainment industry, including Kcee and entrepreneur Emoney.
What followed illustrates the multiplying effect of opportunity. According to Anyidons, the influence, referrals, and connections he received from Obi Cubana opened doors to major performances and high-profile networks. Through these opportunities, he reports earning more than 300 million naira over time.
Just as significant as the financial gain was the access to a network of Igbo business leaders and event organizers who began to recognize and patronize his music. This demonstrates a broader principle in economic development: access to social networks and mentorship can be as valuable as direct financial assistance.
The story also highlights how generosity creates cycles of giving. Anyidons explains that the most important lesson he learned from Obi Cubana was not merely how to succeed, but how to help others without discrimination.
The businessman did not ask where he came from before offering support. That experience reshaped the musician’s personal philosophy. Today, he says he gives back a large portion—up to 70 percent—of what he receives from supporters and fans across the Igbo community worldwide.
This approach reflects a key idea within philanthropy: beneficiaries of generosity often become future benefactors. When individuals experience meaningful support at critical moments, they are more likely to replicate that support for others. In this way, a single act of help can generate long-term social impact far beyond the original gesture.
Another important dimension of the story is the motivation behind giving. Anyidons explains that his life ambition is not simply to accumulate wealth but to make a positive impact before his lifetime ends. This perspective aligns with a growing global conversation about purpose-driven success, where influence and resources are measured not only by personal gain but also by the number of lives improved.
His gratitude toward Obi Cubana even inspired creative expression. The musician composed a special performance for him as a gift, emphasizing that it was done freely and from the heart rather than as a commercial transaction. The gesture symbolizes how appreciation itself can become a form of social currency that strengthens relationships and encourages further generosity.
Perhaps the most enduring lesson from this account is simple but profound: helping others should not depend on tribe, origin, or personal gain. When people create opportunities for others rather than acting as barriers, communities grow stronger. Philanthropy, mentorship, and generosity are not abstract ideals—they are practical forces capable of transforming careers, building networks, and inspiring new generations of givers.
