Due to ongoing geopolitical issues, there are many question marks over just how the 2026 World Cup will play out. One key issue relates to how easy it will be for players, staff members and fans from certain countries to get visas into the United States.
As things stand, a number of nations are currently on the travel ban list enforced by Donald Trump's administration. Of the group, the likes of Senegal, Ivory Coast, Haiti and Iran have already qualified for the summer tournament, which will also be co-hosted by Mexico and Canada.
The escalating conflict between the US, Israel and Iran means that the latter's participation at the tournament is now in doubt, with the president of the Iranian Football Federation, Mehdi Taj, claiming recently: "It is unlikely that we can look forward to the World Cup, but the sports chiefs are the ones who must decide on that."
Iran had already boycotted the competition draw in late 2025, as key Iranian officials were unable to get a VISA to travel to the event, including the federation's president. It now looks as though Haiti could be in for similar troubles this summer.
As per The Athletic, Jamaican team Mount Pleasant are set to play MLS side LA Galaxy this Wednesday in the Champions Cup. However, as many as 10 players have been unable to obtain visas to enter the United States.
It's explained that the Jamaican Premier League side has six Haitian players in its squad, and so issues have arisen due to Trump's travel ban. On top of that, the report adds that Mount Pleasant sources, speaking anonymously to protect relationships, state that a handful of Jamaican players have also had their visas rejected.
Paul Christie, Mount Pleasant’s sporting director, told the Jamaica Observer:
“We don’t want to just show up for the game, we want to be able to compete. But we are not being given the opportunity to be at our best. [This is] not just about brand Mount Pleasant, but this is also about brand Jamaica.”
Although some of the Mount Pleasant players have had their visas completely denied, in most cases, the main issue has been delays. This is a big issue as some appointments have not been scheduled until after Wednesday’s fixture against LA Galaxy. CONCACAF are said to be working with the team, as they look to resolve the issues.
Iran's participation at the 2026 World Cup is in serious doubt amid ongoing conflict with host nation, the United States of America.
Looking forward to how this all might impact players going to the World Cup, Haiti take on Scotland, Brazil and Morocco in the group stages, with all three games to take place in the US (Foxborough, Philadelphia and Atlanta).
Jamaica could yet qualify for the 2026 World Cup as well, with their semi-final qualifying match against New Caledonia taking place on 27 March. As such, they too could face major issues in terms of getting people to the tournament.
It's understood that Trump's travel ban should have exemptions for athletes, support staff and immediate relatives of competitors. This is because the US government can grant entry to the country for a major event, such as the World Cup, the Olympics or other major sporting events.
However, those exemptions do not extend to travelling supporters. (GIVEMESPORT)
