The Cross River State Police Command has confirmed the discovery of eight corpses at a local embalmment facility in Isong Inyang Community along the Calabar–Ikom Highway.
Police spokesperson, ASP Eitokpah Sunday, disclosed in a statement on Friday that the discovery followed credible information received by operatives at about 11:56 a.m. on February 13, 2026.
According to the command, officers were immediately deployed to the scene to verify the report, where they found eight “well-dried corpses” inside the embalmment hall.
The police said one suspect, identified as Sunday Ben Reuben, a native of Nsit Ibom, was arrested in connection with the incident.
Preliminary investigation indicates that the suspect works as a mortician with Enghaut Company Mortuary in Akamkpa Local Government Area.
“The suspect is currently in custody, and a comprehensive investigation is ongoing to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the matter and to determine whether any laws have been contravened,” the statement said.
The command urged residents to remain calm and avoid speculation, assuring that further verified updates would be communicated as the investigation progresses. (The Guardian, but headline rejigged)
