Charly Boy and Peter Obi
Veteran entertainer and self-named “social engineer” Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, has explained why he supports Peter Obi, citing his message and record.
Charly Boy spoke during an interview on the KaaTruths podcast, published on YouTube on Tuesday.
Obi ran for president in 2023 on the Labour Party platform before leaving the party for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in December 2025.
The former governor had earlier announced his intention to contest the 2027 election during an X Space organised by his supporters in July 2025. He also said he could serve one four year term if he reached an understanding with stakeholders backing his ambition.
Charly Boy, who backed Obi during the 2023 election, said he believes Obi has the right message and personal discipline to lead Nigeria.
He said, “I’ve fallen in love with his (Obi’s) message. The things he says, the words that come out of his mouth, are awesome. I’ve read up about him and his history as the former governor of Anambra State; it’s all very awesome. I’ve had the opportunity to understudy him closely, and it’s almost like we’re talking about marriage and how I spent 47 years with one woman.
“I’m ready to die with Peter Obi, because in him I see light. In him, I see the vision he always talks about. If we give him a chance, he will do something, and if he doesn’t, God will punish him a hundredfold. I believe in him. Once my mind is made up about something, I stay there. When I look at the simplicity of the man, he is not like those trying to build empires.”
While reacting to Obi’s repeated promise of a single term, the singer warned that the former governor should focus on building a strong movement and mobilising young Nigerians to demand better leadership.
He said, “This one, he’s saying he wants to do one term, whom he dey tell that one? It’s when we say we’ve had enough. All the people in leadership positions come from the same club. They are anyhow people, scumbags, Yahoo Yahoo people, thieves, rogues in agbada. I have not one atom of respect for those people. They are very, very useless people, If it is not a country blike NIgeira, those people can never lead anything, even my son can do a better job that what your president is doing. ”
Charly Boy also dismissed claims that he supports Obi because of ethnicity, insisting leadership should be about competence and results.
He said, “I don’t care if a goat is a leader, as long as that goat is doing the right thing for the people. Leadership means the people, not about your fucking self. Whether he is Igbo does not concern me, it concerns people wey wan go that way”
He added that his relationship with former President Olusegun Obasanjo shows he aligns himself with leaders he believes share his idea of a better Nigeria.
He said, “If I mention Obasanjo’s name now, some people wil say that one, that one . Not everyone will agree with you. But what holds my friendship with Obasanjo together is that we believe in the same thing: the Nigeria of our dreams. I can see him making moves to actualise that. That’s one of the things I respect about him. As for the others, old age has caught up with them.
When asked about President Bola Tinubu’s administration, Charly Boy also criticised the government, questioned the President’s background and claimed Nigerians’ votes no longer counted. (Guardian)
