PDP South East Zonal Chairman, Ali Odefa
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has declared that the 2027 general election will be a contest between the All Progressives Congress (APC) and millions of hungry and jobless Nigerians.
The party made the assertion during the inauguration of the PDP Caretaker Committees for Enugu and Imo states, organised by the South East zonal leadership of the party in Enugu, yesterday.
Speaking at the event, PDP South East Zonal Chairman, Chief Ali Odefa, described the task before the newly inaugurated chairmen as herculean, noting that the party currently lacks the backing of political office holders in both states.
“In Enugu, the governor, commissioners, local government chairmen, senators and members of the House of Representatives have all moved to the APC. It is their right. So you should not expect support from people in power. You must work very hard.” Odefa added that the situation in Imo State was even more challenging due to the number of political parties competing for dominance.
Despite this, Odefa urged the caretaker committees to organise the party at the grassroots, assuring them of the support of the zonal leadership.
He accused some party members of undermining the PDP for personal gain, but insisted the party would survive without access to state power.
“They are using state apparatus against us, but we have God. Since we have God, we are the majority.”
He said the 2027 election would be driven by worsening economic hardship across the country. “It will not be PDP versus APC. It will be Nigerians versus APC. Nigerians are hungry. People no longer have access to food, hospitals, good schools or meaningful employment.”
He alleged that the cost of living had risen sharply, noting that goods that cost about N25,000 in 2014 now sell for over N500,000.
The newly inaugurated Chairman of the PDP Enugu State Caretaker Committee, Steve Oruruo, said the party remained strong in the state despite political setbacks.
“We don’t just have God, we have the people. This is a struggle between influence and numbers, and the people will prevail.”
Oruruo called for credible elections and urged the party’s national leadership to present candidates that resonate with the masses. “Give the people credible candidates and they will defeat anybody,” he said.
Chairman of the PDP Imo State Caretaker Committee, Jonjude Okere, said the next election would test the conscience of Nigerians. “The election is about hunger and survival,” Okere said, assuring that the party would be revived in Imo State. (The Sun)
